Design and Analysis of Home Compost Pit

The purpose of this project is to design a simple and user friendly device for processing the green waste and converting it to useful compost by using chopped unusable material in the kitchen dried leaves in the garden at individual houses.

The food waste is a growing area of concern with many costs to our community in terms of waste collection, disposal and greenhouse gases. When rotten food ends up in the land-filling it turns into methane, which is accounted for around 3% total greenhouse gas emission which is damaging the environment. Instead of direct disposal in the ground we can process the same waste at individual level in the houses and it can be utilized in the gardens in the houses. 20 to 80% of municipal solid waste contains food materials. Out of this quantity 50 to 70% waste is treatable in the home. This directly can reduce the effects of greenhouse emission by after land filling and also this will reduce the transportation of municipal solid waste outside the city limits.

For designing the compost kits, first a intensive market research was done to identify the different type of kits available in the market. Further a thorough search for various patents of the products was done to better understand the technological advancements in the products. Later after researching various ways to improve the efficiency of the composting process, the functional requirements were set. Using these functional requirements as the guidelines various concepts were taken into consideration. These designs were modeled in CATIA and compared based on the functional requirements set.

Four different concepts are proposed based on the functional requirements and highest graded concept is selected and analyzed for Structural integrity.

Design 1. Horizontal slide earth maker

Design 2. Multi Rotating Wheel Design 3. Rotating Slicer Design

Design 4. Fertilizer Ultimate Compost Pit

The fertilizer ultimate compost kit (Design 4.) shows the best performance and it satisfy all the needs and functional requirements. It has three major compartments; a shredding system, a dual mixing system and a storage space.

The shredding compartment has dual shaft shredding blade assembly that can be connected to a high torque-high rpm motor via the gears provided. Sufficient space for the motor assembly has been provided in the chamber.

The dual mixing chambers are to keep the compost quantity small for faster decomposition. The rotating helical blades help in proper mixing of the waste/compost. Air vents provided in each section help in oxygenation of compost during the mixing process. A moving-fixed plate assembly is used to transfer the waste/compost with the lever. The helical blades also help to push down the waste during the transfer.

The storage chamber at the bottom has the space for the Low rpm-high torque motor needed for the helical blades. It also has sufficient amount of space for storage of the compost. Each has its separate access point/door provided.
