Design and Prototyping of an innovative smart phone support

In today’s technological world, it is hard to imagine life without a cell phone. Phones play music, send emails, take pictures and browse the Internet. It is difficult to have hands free to do something else, especially when watching videos or talking on phone. To remedy this, manufacturer’s offer cell phone holders or stands that can be mounted on table or any other place and allow the person to use the cell phone hands free. In this project our objective is to Design compact portable mobile phones stand which can be used easily and carry anywhere.​

Requirements

  1. To manufacture the prototype, the dimensions should be included in a 50 mm* 50 mm* 70 mm volume.

  2. The support will be manufactures in ABS plastics.

  3. The shape and size are considered in order to make it compact and small.

  4. Thin walls do not be thinner than 4 mm.

  5. ABS plastic is used in order to keep the cost low.

  6. The device will be light in weight.

  7. No detail below 1 mm will appear on the prototype.

  8. The device shall be easy to handle.

The basic idea comes from the design of a pen which we use in our daily lives. I thought to make a design like a pen which will be compact and light in weight. This phone holder can folds up, takes little space and fits in any bag or pocket. It is highly portable and very convenient for use while reading, watching videos, viewing photos, searching the web and much more. The stand is compatible with all kind of devices like Phones, Tablets and E-Readers.

Different views of Stand design

The design consists a main body which is cylindrical in shape. Two legs which are attached to the body can are foldable. One end of the leg is fixed to the bottom of cylinder whereas another is free to rotate. A small support, we can call it 'foot', is attached to each free end of the leg. The grooved area which holds the phone shows up when these small foot parts are opened. Main function of these foots is to restrict sliding of phone outward. Phone mounting on the stand touches the grooves of the legs on one side and top face of cylinder on another side. The legs and foots are fixed in such a way that it rotates only up to certain degree of rotation.

The legs are not attached to the base of cylinder rather it is attached above the base at certain height. This ensures that the center of gravity would not be near the base of cylinder which cause the rotation of whole system. Therefore, attaching the legs certain centimeter above the base helps to shift the Center of gravity away from the base toward legs when open and the phone rests without any problem.

Parts and Assembly Design

All structures need to have appropriate stiffness. It describes the resistance that a body has to elastic deformation and prevents a structure from stretching, thinning, bending or distorting to a non-permissible extent while in use. The stiffness itself depends on the structure's material and geometry. Different aspects are taken into account when establishing the optimum stiffness values.

Analysis

A prototype of the model was done in Rapid prototyping by scaling down the design to 1:2 in order to realise the product and have a better understanding of the design. A complete costing workout was also done for this product design.
